Rental Car Personal Use

Express Drive comes with unlimited miles, so you can earn with Lyft and drive for personal use.

Personal/Rental Car Switching

You can still drive with your own car if you also use a rental car. Car switching allows you to switch between multiple Lyft-approved vehicles. You can use both cars, though if you're an active Express Drive renter, you will not be eligible for Power Driver Bonus and Express Pay regardless of which vehicle you use for Lyft approved rides. If you're an active renter, all rides given with your personal vehicle will still count towards your Rental Rewards bonus and 20 Ride Requirement.

Rental Car Agreement

Your rental agreement varies by car provider and outlines specific details like rental length, personal use policy, applicable fees, etc. Here’s where you can find yours:

  • Hertz: You will receive a paper copy from Hertz when you pick up your rental car.
  • Flexdrive: After you've started your rental, you can view your rental agreement in the Driver Dashboard (must be logged in). You'll receive an updated rental agreement anytime you renew your rental.

Vehicle Pickup, Return, Maintenance, & Repairs

Skip to:

Vehicle Pickups & Availability

Demand for rental cars is high. Rental vehicles are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Follow the instructions below to schedule a pickup:

New Applicants:

  1. Visit lyft.com/expressdrive
  2. Verify your phone number
  3. Select ‘Rent with Express Drive’ to begin your application

Active Drivers (Personal Vehicle):

  1. Visit the 'Vehicles' section in your Driver Dashboard
  2. Select ‘Rent with Express Drive’ to set up a reservation

Vehicles are available if pick-up dates appear in the Driver Dashboard. If you tried to schedule a pickup reservation and no cars were available, keep checking back to try again. Keep in mind before you start a rental, the minimum rental period is 7 days.

Partner Requirements

To maintain your good standing and keep renting each week, our rental partners have some specific requirements for every Express Drive renter:

  • 20 Ride Requirement: Each renter must complete at least 20 rides each week, per the rental agreement.
  • 7-day minimum: There’s a 7-day minimum length for each rental. This means there’s also a 7-day minimum rental charge, even if you return your car after less than 7 days.

Vehicle Renewals

Automatic weekly renewals are a flexible benefit of using Express Drive. As long as you meet our rental partners’ 20-ride requirement and make any necessary payments each week, you’ll be in good standing with our rental partner — and we’ll automatically renew your rental for another 7 days (unless you want to return).

The status of your renewal can be found in the ‘Vehicles’ tab of the Driver Dashboard. We’ll send you an email and SMS to notify you that your rental has been automatically renewed.

28 Day Inspections

Every 28 days, you’ll need to bring your vehicle back to your original rental location so our partners can run a routine inspection. We’ll do our best to get you in and out quickly so you can get back on the road to keep earning.

We’ll remind you when to bring in your car. When prompted to return for a 28 Day Inspection, please schedule your 28 Day Inspection in your Driver Dashboard.

Vehicle Returns

You can return your rental any time to the location where you picked up your vehicle, during normal business hours. As long as you’ve hit the 7-day minimum, you’ll only be charged for the days you had the vehicle. To schedule a return, go to your Driver Dashboard. Be sure to check in with a Lyft associate when you return so we can make sure your rental is properly closed out.

If you need to return or swap your vehicle due to maintenance or repairs, please see our Repairs/Maintenance section below:

Repairs & Maintenance Issues

Hertz

Routine Maintenance

  • What to do: Go to the Hertz or Pep Boys branch where you picked up your rental.
  • Your costs: You won't be charged for routine maintenance. Only Hertz/Pep Boys may render or approve maintenance outside their facility. You won't be reimbursed for maintenance outside of Hertz or Pep Boys approved vendors.

Damage & Repairs (Brakes Issues, Transmission Issues, etc.)

  • What to do: Go to the Hertz or Pep Boys branch where you picked up your rental. If the damage prevents driving (such as a brakes or transmission issue), call Hertz Roadside Assistance: 1-800-654-5060. Do not call Allstate Roadside assistance.
  • Your costs: You may be charged for damages if you’re found to be at fault. See your Hertz rental agreement for more information.

Collisions/Accidents (Your driver account will be deactivated until our review is done.)

  • What to do: Safety comes first. Are you and your passenger okay? Call 911. Then, visit lft.to/accidentorcitation to report the accident regardless of fault. So we can better assist you, have your driver's license ready, gather the insurance information of everyone involved, and make sure you take photos of all four sides of your vehicle (to properly document any damage). If your vehicle needs to be towed, call 1-800-654-5060 for Hertz Roadside Assistance.
  • Your costs: Your driver account will be deactivated and you will be blocked from driving with Lyft until the accident investigation is completed. Lyft’s Trust and Safety team will contact you directly to discuss next steps. You're responsible for rental fees until your rental reservation has ended, so it's important to report any incidents to us as soon as possible. For insurance coverage, please see Express Drive Insurance.
Flexdrive

Routine Maintenance

  • What to do: Routine maintenance is included with your rental and will be performed during your 28 Day Inspection when you bring your vehicle into the branch where you picked up your vehicle. If your rental needs routine maintenance before your 28 Day Inspection, visit a Flexdrive approved vendor. When you arrive, show the vendor your ARI ID card, which should be included in the glovebox of your rental. They'll complete the service and bill Flexdrive directly.
  • Your cost: You won't be charged for routine maintenance. Only Flexdrive approved providers may render or approve maintenance. You won't be reimbursed for maintenance outside of Flexdrive approved vendors.

Damage & Repairs (Body damage, cracked headlights, cracked windshields, etc.)

Rental Cost: Payments, Deposits, & Charges

Skip to:

Rental Car Payments & Charges

Your weekly rate with our rental partners may vary by city and rental car provider. You’re also responsible for taxes and fees such as late returns, re-fueling, tolls, and tickets. For more information on your weekly rental rate, please view your rental agreement.

You’ll only be able to view those rental cost details once you begin the application process.

Your first billing week will start the day you pick the vehicle up, and you’ll get your earnings statement every Tuesday.

If the balance of your rental isn’t covered by your weekly earnings or Rental Rewards, we’ll charge the credit/debit card on your account. Make sure you have a valid card on file at all times to avoid failing a charge. You can update your payment method here. Note: Pre-paid cards are not accepted. You must use a credit/debit card in your name.

If the charge to your card fails, you must pay or return your vehicle within 24 hours to remain eligible to drive with a rental car on the Lyft platform.

Rental Car Deposit

A refundable deposit of up to $250 is required for new applicants and existing drivers to start the Express Drive program. Start an application to see the deposit amount in your city.

Deposits are returned:

  • If you do not pass the DMV/background check
  • If you request to end the Express Drive program before picking up a rental car
  • When you stop using Express Drive and return your car, if your account is in good standing
    • If necessary, your rental deposit will be used to cover any outstanding payment obligations like damages or failed charges once the vehicle is returned. After you return your rental, the remainder of your deposit — or the full amount, if it wasn’t needed to cover any additional costs — will be available in your Earnings Statement within two weeks.

Your Earnings Statement & Costs

After you’ve collected weekly ride earnings, the following rental costs are applied to your earnings:

  • Vehicle rental fee (weekly base fee): This is your base weekly rental rate, before Rental Rewards or other earnings.
  • Ride payments: How much you earned from the Lyft rides you gave. This is based on the time and distance of each ride. Learn more about how your pay is calculated.
  • Lyft platform fee: This amount can be positive or negative. If it's positive, Lyft puts the amount toward growing the business. If it's negative, it means we’re covering the difference between what you earned and what your passenger paid.
  • Rental taxes: Applicable state, local, sales, and rental taxes are added weekly.
  • Misc. fees: This covers a range of other possible charges, such as deep cleaning, refueling, lost keys, etc. Tap ‘Expand’ in your earnings statement to see more details on misc. fees.
Prorated Rental Fees

Your first billing week will start the day you pick the vehicle up. If you pick up any day other than Monday, your first week will be less than seven days — so we’ll prorate the cost accordingly.

For example, let’s say you pick up your rental on a Thursday and your weekly rental rate is $210. Since you would have had the rental for four days come Monday, you’ll be charged $30 a day for 4 days ($210➗7 days = $30). So you would owe $120 total for that first week ($30 x 4 days). After that first week, the regular 7-day billing week runs Monday to Sunday.

Note: The day you return the vehicle will be factored into your final rental payment. This means if you return a vehicle on Monday (the beginning of a new week), you'll be charged the prorated amount for having the car that day.

Rental Rewards

Rental rewards are an extra bonus built into the Express Drive program. Rental rewards are totally optional, and can help you get most out of your time on the road as well as offset the cost of your rental. You’ll be able to see your specific rental rewards requirements and progress in your Driver Dashboard. To qualify for Rental Rewards each week, you need to:

  • Hit the ride count for the tier you’re driving toward: We count each completed ride as part of your total weekly ride count. The rental rewards week goes from Monday at 5 AM through to the next Monday at 4:59 AM.
    • Each completed pickup and drop-off counts as one completed ride. For Lyft Line routes, each unique pickup counts as a ride. For example, if you have two pickups during one Line ride, that counts as two rides towards your rental rewards.
  • Make sure to hit your peak ride count: Peak hours are Lyft’s busiest times, when passengers are requesting rides the most. These hours vary by market. For a ride to qualify as a peak ride, it must have started during the peak hour. All peak rides will count toward your total ride count. So if you gave 20 peak rides and 10 non-peak hour rides, that’s 30 total rides.
  • Maintain a 90% acceptance rate: When a passenger requests a ride, you can either accept or cancel the request. If you cancel or don't respond to a ride request, your acceptance rate decreases. If your average acceptance rate is below 90% at the end of the rental rewards week, you’ll be ineligible for rental rewards.

Each week, Lyft determines if you’re eligible for rental incentives. If so, we automatically add the bonus amount to your earnings, which covers most rental charges. Keep in mind that rental rewards never cover rental taxes.

Prorated Rental Rewards

Ride requirements (as well as the amount of the reward itself) are prorated based on when your rental agreement begins. Monday is always the start of the billing week.

For example, let's say your rental reward is $70, and the ride requirement is 70. If you pick up your car on a Friday, you will only have your car for 3 days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) for the first billing week. This means you would only need to give 30 rides to meet the ride requirement for your first week, and the bonus amount would be $30.

Check out the ‘Earnings’ tab of your Driver Dashboard to see your specific rental rewards requirements and learn more.
