Community guidelines

In order to protect all of our community members we have the following guidelines to establish Trust and Safety within the Lyft community. The focus of these guidelines is to create a community grounded in the principles of Care, Respect, Trust, Inclusion and Transparency.

Be Nice

  • Don't discriminate. Lyft is committed to maintaining an inclusive and welcoming community. Discrimination against a passenger or driver on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, physical or mental disability, mental condition, marital status, age, or sexual orientation is not allowed. Refusing passengers with service animals is a direct violation of these guidelines.
  • Talk to each other. Yes, some days we are just grumpy and want to be in our own bubble. But everyone has a story worth sharing. Everyone has an opinion about soulmates, music, the American Dream. Everyone is driving towards something. Ask. You never know what you might learn.
  • Do not damage another community member's property.
  • In the spirit of respect for everyone in the community, smoking inside Lyft cars may impact community members with respiratory issues or those who are bothered by the smell.
  • Smile generously. It has the power to change someone's day and spread joy.

Be Friendly

  • A car is small. This can be great for conversation but also can make people feel uncomfortable if we don't respect each other's space. No touching without consent. Avoid swearing or offensive language. Not everyone wants to be asked "Where are you from," or "Do you live alone?" Many people find it invasive to be asked "Are you single?" Use good judgement. Don't be rude. Pretty simple.
  • Avoid unwanted contact with a community member following your ride. For example, visiting, texting, or calling someone.
  • It is important to respect other people's space and privacy. Depending on local regulations, the use of a dashboard camera or other recording device during rides may not be allowed. Some cities or states require signage making known the presence of recording devices. Please refer to your city and state's regulations on recording devices when giving or taking rides.

Stay Safe

  • Drivers must obey traffic and driving laws, including keeping to the speed limit, avoiding texting and driving and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Reports of such behavior could result in removal from the Lyft community.
  • Violating the law or requesting another community member to do so could put members of our community in harm's way, and is strictly forbidden.
  • You must be 18 to sign up for a Lyft passenger account. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when riding on the platform. If a driver believes a passenger might be underage, the driver reserves the right to request the passenger confirm their age before continuing the ride.
  • If you're traveling with a young child, bring a child safety seat. If you do not bring a child safety seat, the driver will not be allowed to take you and your child onboard so as to ensure your child's safety and you will be asked to cancel the ride.
  • It is hard to know what someone else is or is not comfortable with. The presence of a weapon might make a community member fear for his or her own safety. As such, Lyft has a strict No Weapons policy. This policy includes but is not limited to any form of firearm, stun gun, explosives, knives and tasers.

Be Helpful

  • Be communicative. Understand that drivers may need to adjust pick-up locations based on traffic and laws. Communication between passenger and driver can be key to a successful pick-up in busy or congested areas.
  • Respect each other's time. As a passenger, this means waiting on the curb, not looking for your keys in a panic when the driver has already pulled up. As a driver, this means avoiding cancellations unless they are warranted.
  • Give constructive feedback through the app. If you didn't enjoy the ride - because the air freshener was overpowering, or the driver made you feel unsafe, or the passenger was disrespectful - please take the time to explain why you gave them a lower rating. We can all learn from our mistakes. Your feedback will remain anonymous.

Reasons for account deactivation or removal from the platform

In order to protect all of our community members we have these guidelines to establish Trust and Safety within our community. Not meeting the expectations of the community guidelines, constantly or temporarily, will result in your exclusion from the community. More specifically, the following actions can result in permanent removal:

Passenger:

  • Discrimination against another member of the community on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, sex, marital status, gender identity, age or any other characteristic protected under law
  • Violation of local law, or asking another passenger or driver to violate the law
  • Carrying firearms
  • Physically touching passengers or drivers without consent
  • Abusive, discriminatory, sexual, or inappropriate language or gestures
  • Damaging drivers or other passenger's property
  • Fraudulent behavior
  • Engaging the driver to break the law or the community guidelines, example taking a child without a child car seat
  • Asking to pay the driver in cash
  • Making excessive noise, cursing, or being agitated while being driven

Drivers:

  • Discrimination against another member of the community on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, sex, marital status, gender identity, age or any other characteristic protected under law
  • Background check failure
  • Carrying firearms
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Refusing a service animal or a passenger with a wheelchair
  • Physically touching passengers without consent
  • Abusive, discriminatory, sexual or inappropriate language or gestures
  • Damaging passenger's property or retaining and refusing to return passenger items
  • Fraudulent behavior - false pickups, location spoofing, failure to end ride, payment fraud, or misrepresenting identity on profile or submitted documents.
  • Having someone in the ride (like a friend or loved one) who isn't a passenger
  • Unsafe driving
  • Asking for ride payment in cash (cash tips are ok)
  • Inaccurate personal information on driver profile
  • Your driver rating is the average of your last 100 completed rides. Consistently low ratings can put you at risk of deactivation if it drops below 4.6, so check your feedback emails every Friday to find ways to improve.
  • Excessive ride cancellations
