Manitoba Driver Information

This page provides information about vehicle, driver, and document requirements, province regulations, insurance coverage, and city-specific requirements needed to drive with Lyft in the province of Manitoba.
To apply to drive in Manitoba, submit an application online or in the Lyft Driver app –– download it from the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play store. To be approved to drive, applicants must meet these requirements.

What you need to drive with Lyft in Manitoba
To be approved to drive, applicants must meet the below requirements, as well as maintain valid and current documents to prove eligibility. Failing to update a required document before the expiration date results in temporary deactivation.
Use your Lyft Driver app or Driver Dashboard to upload your documents.
Vehicle requirements
  1. Vehicle Age
    1. 20 years or newer if you’re driving in Winnipeg
  2. 4 doors
  3. 5-8 seats, including the driver's
  4. Not a taxi or stretch limousine or rental vehicle
  5. Not titled as salvage, non-repairable, rebuilt or any other equivalent classification

Driver requirements
  1. Valid Manitoba driver’s licence
    1. Driver’s licence must be Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 and issued in Manitoba
    2. Temporary licences are acceptable, but be sure to upload your permanent copy when you receive it
      1. Learners permits, OOS licences, and graduated licences will not be accepted.
  2. Be 25 years or older
  3. Pass a driver screening, which reviews your driving history and criminal background check. Learn more about driver screenings.

Document requirements
Vehicle COI (Certificate of Inspection)
To drive with Lyft in Manitoba, your vehicle must pass an annual inspection and receive a certificate of inspection within 30 days prior to the application for registration.
You must ensure that your vehicle undergoes annual inspections and occasional inspections ordered by an enforcement officer. Any inspection station in Manitoba can give you a certificate once your vehicle passes an inspection. To find an inspection location, click here.
Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
You are required to pass a criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). Your VSC must be issued no more than 90 days before the application for registration is made.
Checkr can’t obtain this information so you’ll be required to provide this documentation upon initial application. Once completed, upload photos of your results in your Driver Dashboard within 90 days of the request.
You can obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check by visiting your local police service.
Child Abuse Registry Check
Drivers must provide a child abuse registry check, issued no more than 90 days before the application for registration was made. This check must be done annually.
Checkr can’t obtain this information so you’ll be required to provide this documentation yourself. You must provide two valid pieces of government-issued identification (ID), which includes your name, date of birth, signature, photo, and an expiry date.

Once you’ve filled out the application, forward or mail it to the Child Abuse Registry. You can also go in-person to fill out and submit an application at 777 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 0N3z on the first floor.

HST Account Number
Lyft drivers in Canada are required to register for, and remit, harmonized sales tax (HST). Learn more about HST requirements here.
Proof of work eligibility
You must upload one of the following documents as proof of work eligibility (must contain your name, and can be any of the following):
  1. Passport (example)
  2. Residency card (example)
  3. Birth certificate (example)
  4. Citizenship card (example)
  5. Work permit (example)
  6. Study permit (example)
  7. Certificate of Indian Status (example)
  8. Canadian Forces Identification Card (example)
Commercial driving record
Drivers in Manitoba are required to obtain and provide a copy of their driver’s abstract issued by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) no more than 90 days prior to the end of the 12-month period.
You shouldn’t register as a PTP driver if you have been convicted of a major driving offense within the past 10 years.
To obtain your driving record:
  1. Print and sign the completed form.
  2. If it is a commercial request, check the box for commercial driver abstract and submit the completed form by fax or mail.

Note: This step can take multiple days to complete. Once you submit the form, please allow 3-7 business days for a status update.
Rideshare driver training 
You won’t be permitted to drive as a PTP driver until you complete the required Lyft training.
You must also complete a mandatory Building Cultural Competency training course that is delivered by the Indigenous Community, which is paid for by the city. You’ll only be required to do this training once.
Emblem requirements
Drivers are required to display the Lyft emblem while in driver mode. The Lyft emblem is Lyft’s official trade dress. It helps passengers and law enforcement identify your vehicle.
The Lyft emblem should be displayed in the lower corner of your front and rear windshield on the passenger side every time you enter driver mode.

If you’ve just been approved to drive, you should receive your Lyft emblems shortly. If you didn't get one or need a new one, contact us. In the meantime, you may print a temporary emblem.

Best practices
  1. Display all required emblems and stickers
  2. Always have your driver’s licence and insurance document
  3. Follow all airport rules
  4. Don't accept street hails
  5. Don't accept cash for rides
  6. Don't wait in taxi lines
Note: Be prepared to have your vehicle and documents inspected if you are stopped by law enforcement or a city official requesting a ride for the purpose of an inspection. Drivers who fail this inspection may be suspended from offering rides on the Lyft platform.
