Manitoba Driver Information

This page provides information about vehicle, driver, and document requirements, province regulations, insurance coverage, and city-specific requirements needed to drive with Lyft in the province of Manitoba.
To apply to drive in Manitoba, submit an application online or in the Lyft Driver app -- download it from the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play store. To be approved to drive, applicants must meet these requirements.

What you need to drive with Lyft in Manitoba
To be approved to drive, applicants must meet the below requirements, as well as maintain valid and current documents to prove eligibility. Failing to update a required document before the expiration date results in temporary deactivation.
Use your Lyft Driver app or Driver Dashboard to upload your documents.
Vehicle requirements
  • Vehicle Age
    • 20 years or newer if you’re driving in Winnipeg
  • 4 doors
  • 5-8 seats, including the driver's
  • Not a taxi or stretch limousine or rental vehicle
  • Not titled as salvage, non-repairable, rebuilt or any other equivalent classification

Driver requirements
  • Valid Manitoba driver’s licence
    • Driver’s licence must be Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 and issued in Manitoba
    • Learners permits, OOS licences, graduated licences, and temporary licences will not be accepted.
  • Be 25 years or older
  • Pass a driver screening, which reviews your driving history and criminal background check. Learn more about driver screenings.
  • Have a smartphone that can download and run the Lyft Driver app. See phone software recommendations.
Document requirements
Vehicle COI (Certificate of Inspection)
To drive with Lyft in Manitoba, your vehicle must pass an annual inspection and receive a certificate of inspection within 30 days prior to the application for registration.
You must ensure that your vehicle undergoes annual inspections and occasional inspections ordered by an enforcement officer. Any inspection station in Manitoba can give you a certificate once your vehicle passes an inspection. To find an inspection location, click here.
Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
You are required to pass a criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). Your VSC must be issued no more than 90 days before the application for registration is made.
Checkr can’t obtain this information so you’ll be required to provide this documentation upon initial application. Once completed, upload photos of your results in your Driver Dashboard within 90 days of the request.
You can obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check by visiting your local police service.
Child Abuse Registry Check
Drivers must provide a child abuse registry check, issued no more than 90 days before the application for registration was made. This check must be done annually.
Checkr can’t obtain this information so you’ll be required to provide this documentation yourself. You must provide two valid pieces of government-issued identification (ID), which includes your name, date of birth, signature, photo, and an expiry date.

Once you’ve filled out the application, forward or mail it to the Child Abuse Registry. You can also go in-person to fill out and submit an application at 777 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 0N3z on the first floor.

Note: Applications may require 4-6 weeks for processing. We suggest submitting your application as soon as possible to ensure it's processed in a timely manner.
HST Account Number
Lyft drivers in Canada are required to register for, and remit, harmonized sales tax (HST). Learn more about HST requirements here.
Proof of work eligibility
You must upload one of the following documents as proof of work eligibility (must contain your name, and can be any of the following):
Commercial driving record
Drivers in Manitoba are required to obtain and provide a copy of their driver’s abstract issued by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) no more than 90 days prior to the end of the 12-month period.
You shouldn’t register as a PTP driver if you have been convicted of a major driving offence within the past 10 years.
To obtain your driving record:
  1. Print and sign the completed form.
  2. If it is a commercial request, check the box for commercial driver abstract and submit the completed form by fax or mail.

Note: This step can take multiple days to complete. Once you submit the form, please allow 3-7 business days for a status update.
Winnipeg driver training
You must complete 3 required training courses to drive in Winnipeg.
New drivers have to acknowledge at onboarding that they have registered for the training program. Existing drivers need to upload their training certificates to their account to continue to drive on the Lyft platform.
Note: If you do not upload valid training certificates within 90 days of being approved to drive with Lyft you will be ineligible to give rides.
The three training courses are:

  • Accessibility Training
  • Vehicles for Hire Professional Driver Training
Cultural Competency Training is a free in-person course provided by The City of Winnipeg. Sign up for the course here.
Accessibility Training is an online course offered by ILRC that costs $65 to complete. You’ll need to complete his training course every 3 years. Sign up for Accessibility Training here.
Vehicles for Hire Professional Driver Training is an in-person course that costs $190 to complete. You’ll need to be licensed or registered for the course to remain valid. Call 204-832-9637 to sign up for this training. Learn more information here.
Emblem requirements
Drivers are required to display the Lyft emblem while in driver mode. The Lyft emblem is Lyft’s official trade dress. It helps passengers and law enforcement identify your vehicle.
The Lyft emblem should be displayed in the lower corner of your front and rear windshield on the passenger side every time you enter driver mode.

If you’ve just been approved to drive, you should receive your Lyft emblems shortly. If you didn't get one or need a new one, contact us. In the meantime, you may print a temporary emblem.

  • Follow all airport rules
  • Don't accept street hails
  • Don't accept cash for rides
  • Don't wait in taxi lines
Note: Be prepared to have your vehicle and documents inspected if you are stopped by law enforcement or a city official requesting a ride for the purpose of an inspection. Drivers who fail this inspection may be suspended from offering rides on the Lyft platform.
