Driving record check

Potential Lyft drivers must pass a driving record check. Lyft uses a third-party company to check driving records.

Lyft reviews the results of these checks and disqualifies applicants who don’t meet the standards of both Lyft and local regulations. Applicants are ineligible to drive on the Lyft platform if, among other things, any of the following are on your driving record:

  • Eight or more demerit points
  • A conviction in the past five years for impaired or dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop at the scene of a collision, careless driving, or driving with a suspended license

Different standards may apply based on local requirements specific to ridesharing. Lyft conducts driving record re-checks annually. Lyft also reserves the right to disqualify a driver at any time should their driving record reveal any of the above items or for any safety-related reason at Lyft’s discretion.

If you don’t pass your driving record check, you’ll receive an email notification with instructions on how to see or dispute the results.

Background check

Potential Lyft drivers must pass a criminal background check. Lyft’s background checks are provided by a third-party company and include a Canadian Criminal Record check of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police databases.

Lyft reviews the results of these checks and disqualifies applicants who don’t meet the standards of both Lyft and local regulations. Applicants are ineligible to drive on the Lyft platform if, among other things, the background check results include a conviction for a:

  • Violent crime
  • Drug-related offense
  • Sexual offense
  • Certain theft or property damage offense

Lyft conducts background checks annually and reserves the right to disqualify a driver at any time should the background check reveal a disqualifying offense or for any safety-related reason.

If you don’t pass your background check, you will receive notice via email with instructions on how to see or dispute inaccuracies in the results. Keep in mind that background checks may take a few weeks to process because Lyft uses a third-party company to conduct these checks.

Current device

The Lyft Driver app requires a cellular connection, so your device must be supported by Lyft to drive. We don't support wifi-only devices (like wifi-only iPads).

See Phone software recommendations and settings to see which operating systems we support. While earlier versions of operating systems may work, they may not provide the best experience and new app features.
