How tolls work for drivers
If you pass through a toll during a ride, you’ll pay the toll upfront and then get paid back. You can view toll payments in your ride earnings.
Note: You aren’t paid back for the following tolls:
- Optional express or HOV lane tolls.
- Tolls after the ride ends, except in cities with eligible return tolls.
- Tolls on the way to scheduled pickups
- Tolls on the way to a ride that is canceled
If your passenger offers to pay a toll with cash, please decline. Their ride price includes the cost of any tolls, and the use of cash for tolls is against our Terms of Service.

Viewing reimbursed tolls
You can view your toll reimbursements in your Dashboard or in your Earnings activity. You can also see them as line items in your weekly summary.
To see reimbursed tolls for a specific ride:
- Open the main menu, then tap 'Account.'
- Tap 'Dashboard,’ then tap ‘Driving history.’
- Select the ride you want to review.

How we calculate tolls
We base our toll charges on the local electronic toll collection system's pricing. Usually, this price is lower than the cash rate.
We don’t reimburse the difference between the cash rate and the local electronic rate. To avoid overpaying, we recommend using the electronic system.
Lyft doesn’t pay toll collectors. Drivers are responsible for paying toll collection agencies directly for toll fees.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts drivers are reimbursed for eligible tolls at the commercial E-ZPass rate.
Drivers will receive an adjustment from E-ZPass to the commercial toll rate on their E-ZPass statement.
Drivers with commercial transponders won’t see a difference in their E-ZPass statement.
Lyft doesn’t pay toll collectors. Drivers are responsible for paying toll collection agencies directly for toll fees.

San Francisco/Silicon Valley, California

Regional surcharges
The following regions have a surcharge.
Connecticut and New York City
You’ll receive an additional $15 surcharge if a ride starts in Connecticut and ends in New York City.
New Jersey and New York City
Any ride between New York City and New Jersey has a $20 surcharge, which includes all tolls.
You'll receive an extra $19.43 if the ride:
- Begins in New Jersey
- Crosses Staten Island
- Crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge going east
The extra $19.43 will display in two payments: one for $6.55 and one for $12.88.
Requesting a toll review
If you think there’s a problem with a toll reimbursement, you can follow these steps to get your toll reviewed:
- Open the app menu and tap ‘Support and Safety.'
- Tap 'Get Help,'
- Under ‘Your last ride,’ tap ‘Get help with this ride.' If you want to review a different ride, tap 'See other rides' instead.
- Select ‘Toll payment or reimbursement’ from the list of to help topics
From there, you’ll be able to review your selected ride. Review requests must be submitted within 30 days of the original ride. Lyft is unable to cover charges from late toll payments, administrative fees, or new tags.
