In-app recording of rides
With in-app recording, you can record rides if you feel uncomfortable. These recordings can be shared with the Lyft Safety Team if you need to create a safety report.
Both riders and drivers can record audio and select drivers can record video of rides. If you opt-in to scheduled recording, we’ll let riders know that recording may happen during the ride.
Recording is not available in Canada at this time.

Recording audio
You can choose to record audio:
- For every ride.
- Only at night (9 PM–6 AM).
- Only on demand.
You can change these settings any time.
Riders and drivers can record audio of rides. If you opt-in to scheduled recording, we’ll let passengers know that recording may happen during the ride.
Choosing your settings
To allow recording your ride’s audio, open the Lyft Driver app, then:
- Open the main menu, then select ‘Learning and Resources.’
- Select ‘Safety tools.’
- Select ‘Record audio of rides,’ then choose the recording setting you want.
- Give Lyft access to your mic.
Once your ride ends, the audio will automatically save to your device.
Recording video
You can only record videos of rides on demand. If you want to record video during a ride, go to your safety tools and turn ‘Record video’ on before or during the ride.
Recording on demand
Be sure you give Lyft permission to access your camera/mic in your ‘Safety tools’ before giving rides. You won’t be able to access your settings menu while giving a ride for safety reasons.
To start or stop recording audio while giving a ride:
1. Select the ‘Safety Tools’ icon at the bottom of the ride screen.
2. Turn the ‘Record audio’ selection on or off.
The recording will automatically turn off once you end the ride and save to your device.
Riders won’t be notified if you start a recording during a ride.
Sending recordings to support
You can attach an in-app recording from your ride when reporting a safety issue or accident.
Select ‘Attach ride recording,’ and the recording will automatically be included with your report. No one will have access to these recordings unless you share them with Lyft.
Issues with recording
Your audio recording will automatically save to your device, even if it’s interrupted.
You can still upload a partial recording if you want to submit a safety report.
To prevent interruptions, try to:
- Give Lyft access to your camera/mic.
- Keep your phone charged.
- Make sure you have storage space on your phone.
- Don’t use your camera/mic for other apps.
- Avoid overheating your phone.
