Audio recording
As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, we develop advanced tools to protect you on every ride. With Audio Recording, riders and drivers can record audio during a ride, right in the Lyft app. Schedule recordings in advance, or start them when you want — it’s up to you. Audio Recording is not available in Canada at this time.

Recording audio
Both riders and drivers can record audio of rides. Before you get in the vehicle, we’ll let drivers know that the ride may be recorded.
You can choose to:
- Always record audio.
- Only record audio at night.
- Never automatically record audio.
You can choose your settings for audio recording at any time, in your safety tools.
Note: Make sure you keep your Lyft app open at the beginning of your ride to start recording. iOS won’t let Lyft start recording audio if the app isn’t open.
Automatically record audio
To automatically record your ride’s audio, open the Lyft app, then:
- Open the main menu, then select ‘Settings.’
- Select ‘Safety tools.’
- Select ‘Audio recording,’ then choose the recording setting you want.
- Give Lyft access to your mic.
Once your ride ends, the audio will automatically save to your device.
Record audio on demand
You can record audio in your ride when you feel uncomfortable. You can share the recording with the Lyft Safety Team when you create a safety report.
To record your ride’s audio on demand, open the Lyft app while you’re in a ride, then:
- Select ‘Safety tools,’ then ‘Audio recording.’
- Select the record button.
- Give Lyft access to your mic. You’ll only do this if you haven’t previously given Lyft access.
Once your ride ends, the audio will automatically save to your device.
Note: Drivers see a message on all rides saying the ride might be recorded, but they won’t be notified if you decide to record the ride’s audio.
Sending audio to support
You can attach an audio recording from your ride when you report a safety issue or accident.
Select ‘Attach audio recording from this ride,’ and the audio recording will automatically attach to the report.
The audio will be encrypted and saved to your device for 7 days. No one will have access to these recordings unless you share them with Lyft.
Issues with recording
Your audio recording will automatically save to your device, even if it’s interrupted.
You can still upload a partial recording if you want to submit a safety report.
To prevent interruptions, try to:
- Keep your phone charged.
- Make sure you have storage space on your phone.
- Not use your mic for other things.
