Safety info for riders

Our purpose is to serve and connect, and that starts with safety. That’s why we’ve created always-on protective safety measures that start before you get in, as well as customizable in-ride safety tools for added peace of mind. Because when everyone feels safe, we can create space for the connection and care that makes Lyft the great community it is.

Emergency situations
If this is an emergency, please call 911.
As a part of Lyft’s partnership with ADT, you can now request emergency help through the app.
  1. Navigate to your Safety tool in-ride panel
  2. Tap 'Get emergency help' to alert ADT. They'll call you for more info.
If you don’t answer, ADT contacts 911 to provide your location details. You’ll be provided with real-time updates in the Lyft app with the status of your emergency request.
RapidSOS
Lyft has partnered with RapidSOS to launch a pilot program for drivers and riders  in the Toronto area and Puerto Rico.
When the call with 911 is connected through the Lyft app, RapidSOS automatically provides data such as your real-time location, vehicle details (make and model), and license plate information to first responders.
This helps local police and first responders locate you quickly during an emergency.
Note: If you opted-out of location sharing, we will only share vehicle details with RapidSOS
To initiate a call with 911:
  1. Navigate to your Safety tool in-ride panel
  2. Tap 'Get emergency help'
After the call, you’ll have the option to contact our Safety team to tell us what happened.
Real-time ride tracking
We monitor rides for unusual activity, like long stops or route deviations. If we notice anything off about your ride, we’ll contact you to see if you need help with Smart Trip Check-In.
Safety that starts before you get in
Every driver completes verification, background checks, and mandatory safety education before driving with Lyft. We also work to verify rider profiles, so drivers can trust who they’re sharing the ride with, too.
Driver background checks
All drivers need to pass a background check before they can drive with Lyft. After that, we continue to run yearly background checks.
We also constantly monitor for criminal convictions and whenever necessary, we deactivate drivers so they no longer drive with Lyft.
Road safety monitoring
We take road safety seriously. To help drivers stay safe behind the wheel, we’ve developed a number of road safety measures.
We give customized feedback to drivers based on their driving behavior to help them continuously improve.
We proactively alert drivers if they break posted speed limits.
Participating drivers get weekly reports to help them adopt safe driving practices, including avoiding harsh braking, swerving, and phone use.
Report a safety incident
