    How tolls work for drivers

While in an active Lyft ride, toll costs are automatically added to the rider's fare. This means drivers pay tolls upfront and then get reimbursed for tolls after the rider pays for the ride. This does not apply to optional tolls such as those in HOV or express lanes.
Lyft does not pay toll collectors. Lyft drivers are responsible for paying toll collection agencies directly for appropriate toll fees. Lyft is unable to cover charges from late toll payments, administrative fees, or new tags.

    How tolls are calculated

Toll amounts are based on local electronic toll collection system pricing, such as FasTrak, TollTag, Good to Go! Pass, or E-ZPass.
At this time, Lyft doesn't pay the difference between the local electronic toll collection rate and other rates, such as cash rates. To avoid overpaying, we recommend using electronic systems.
    Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
A $20 surcharge, which includes tolls, is added to the fare on all trips between New York City and New Jersey. If the trip begins in New Jersey, crosses to Staten Island, and then crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, there is an additional $19 surcharge. This makes for a total of $39 added to the price, which again includes tolls.
    Connecticut to New York City
In addition to applicable tolls and surcharges that may be added to your fare, there will be a $15 surcharge added to all trips originating in Connecticut and ending in New York City.
Massachusetts drivers will be reimbursed for applicable tolls at the commercial E-ZPass rate. Drivers will receive an adjustment from E-ZPass to the commercial toll rate on their E-ZPass statement. Drivers with commercial transponders will not see a difference in their E-ZPass statement. Learn more about this on the MassDOT website.

When are tolls added to a passenger's fare?

Passengers automatically pay for tolls incurred during active Lyft rides, after they've been picked up.
In some instances, drivers must pay a bridge or tunnel toll to return to their original coverage area or location. This return toll is added to the passenger’s fare so drivers are fairly compensated for their time and effort. See all qualifying return tolls here.

What tolls are not added to a passenger's fare?

In most cases, drivers pay for tolls incurred before a driver taps to arrive or after the ride ends but there are some exceptions. Click here for a full list of return tolls that qualify for reimbursement.
Fees related to taking optional express or HOV lanes aren't paid for by passengers and will not be reimbursed.

Does Lyft take fees from toll payments?

Tolls paid by passengers aren't subject to any Lyft fees, so the full toll amount is added to driver earnings.

Where can I see toll information for rides?

Toll fees are included in the individual ride breakdown in your ride history and as line items in the Driver Dashboard.

Can passengers pay for tolls with cash?

It's against our Terms of Service for passengers to use cash for portions (for example, toll fees) of a Lyft ride except for tips, which can also be done in the app. Passengers are automatically charged for tolls in the app, so there’s no need to ask passengers to pay for tolls with cash or a credit card. If passengers offer to pay for a toll with cash or a credit card, drivers should decline the offer.

    I think I’m missing a toll fee

Toll fees are included in the individual ride breakdown in your ride history and as line items in the Driver Dashboard. If you think a ride amount is missing a toll fee, we’re happy to help investigate. Tap 'Contact Support' below and include the following:
    • Date and approximate time you passed through the toll
    • The amount you paid for the toll
    • A picture of the toll receipt
Need help? If you're on a mobile device, use the Lyft Driver app 'Help' tab to see options for contacting us. Be sure you have the most updated app version
Heads up: Toll receipts must be submitted within 30 days of a ride. Tolls must be linked with an active Lyft ride and won't be covered by Lyft if incurred on the way to the coverage area or to pick up a passenger.
