What is occupational accident insurance?
Occupational accident insurance provides medical expense and disability benefits for covered injuries while drivers on the Lyft platform are completing trips that originate in:
  1. California on or after December 16, 2020.*
  2. Massachusetts on or after October 1, 2024.*
  3. Minnesota on or after January 1, 2025.
The benefits are designed to help reduce the financial impact of an accident on you and your family.
*Subject to policy terms and conditions, California and Massachusetts drivers may also be eligible for occupational accident insurance coverage while logged onto the Lyft app and available to accept a ride request but only if the driver has not accepted a ride request from another network company.
How does occupational accident insurance differ from the rideshare auto liability insurance Lyft provides while I’m online?
The auto liability insurance policy covers third party bodily injury and property damage for covered accidents if your personal insurance does not apply. The auto liability policy may not cover benefits available to you under occupational accident insurance such as medical expenses and disability payments that result from a covered accident.
Do I need to sign up for this insurance coverage?
No, approved drivers on the Lyft platform are eligible for occupational accident insurance coverage while they are using the Lyft app to complete trips that originate in:
  1. California on or after December 16, 2020.
  2. Massachusetts on or after October 1, 2024.
  3. Minnesota on or after January 1, 2025.
Do I need to pay for occupational accident insurance?
No, approved drivers do not need to pay for this occupational accident insurance coverage.
How do I report a claim?
California and Massachusetts. If you are injured as the result of an auto accident while logged onto the Lyft app*, report the accident through the Lyft app, or contact our Claims Customer Care team. If your injury resulted from any other incident while logged onto the Lyft app, please contact Lyft Safety to report the incident. In both cases, our teams will collect details on the incident and work with our insurance provider to set up a claim.
Minnesota. If you are injured as the result of an auto accident while completing a ride on the Lyft app* that originated in Minnesota, report the accident through the Lyft app, or contact our Claims Customer Care team. If your injury resulted from any other incident while logged onto the Lyft app, please contact Lyft Safety to report the incident. In both cases, our teams will collect details on the incident and work with our insurance provider to set up a claim.
*When the app is off, your personal auto insurance coverage applies and there is no coverage from the Occupational Accident insurance maintained by Lyft.
I was logged into another app at the time of the accident. Am I still eligible for coverage?
You are not eligible for occupational accident insurance benefits under the policy procured by Lyft if you are logged onto the Lyft app but have accepted a ride request from another network company.
But you may be eligible for coverage under the occupational accident insurance policy procured by Lyft in select states* if you are available to accept requests on several network company platforms at the same time, as long as you are logged into the Lyft app and have not accepted a ride.
*Select states include covered accidents in California occurring on or after December 16, 2020 and covered accidents in Massachusetts occurring on or after October 1, 2024. Approved drivers in Minnesota would not be eligible if they were logged into the Lyft app but have not accepted a ride.
