Rider verification for drivers

Riders can now get a verification badge when they verify their ID with Lyft.
A verification badge is optional. Riders can still request rides even if they aren’t verified.

What it is
A verified badge means we verified information in the rider’s user account.
Usually, this means cross-checking certain personal information like legal name and phone number. We use trusted third-party databases to confirm this info.
Riders may have to upload a government issued ID like a driver’s license or passport if the initial check is unsuccessful.
What happens if I cancel a ride for an unverified rider?
You’ll receive the standard cancel penalties if you cancel on a passenger just because they’re not verified.
Note: This isn’t the same as a passenger not matching their profile. If you believe your rider doesn’t match their profile, you can cancel the ride without a penalty.
Rider didn’t match verified profile
If you believe your rider doesn’t match their profile, you can cancel the ride without a penalty.
You should never cancel a ride for discriminatory reasons. Lyft's community is diverse, representing differing generations, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientations, and religions. We encourage open-mindedness and mutual respect.
Riders
You can now get a verified rider badge. Verification helps drivers know who you are and helps everyone using Lyft feel safer.

Getting verified
You most likely won’t have to do anything to get verified.
We’ll try to verify you using your  name and phone number in your profile already.
If the information can’t be validated, we’ll ask you to provide your legal name. We may also ask you to provide a photo ID as well.
If you don’t have a photo ID, you can also provide another form of identification like a utility bill or military ID.
Your privacy
Drivers will only see your:
  1. First name.
  2. Rating.
  3. Verification status.
  4. Profile picture (if you have one).
Drivers won’t be able to see this info again after 24 hours.
The info used to verify your identity will be protected, stored, and maintained as described in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
