Lyft Teen for Drivers
With Lyft Teen, we’re helping parents and guardians give their Teens (ages 13–17) the independence they need to get to practice, school, or a friend’s house. As a driver, you play a huge role in making these connections happen.
Eligibility and your preferences
Auto-enrollment
If you meet the requirements for the program, you’ll be automatically opted in. This ensures enough drivers are available to help families when we launch.
Managing your preferences
We want you to have the final say in the types of rides you take. If you’d prefer not to give Teen rides, you can opt out at any time:
- Open the Menu in the top-left corner of the Driver app.
- Tap Driving Preferences.
- Find the Lyft Teen ride type.
- Switch the toggle to Off.
You can turn this back on whenever you like, as long as you still meet the program’s eligibility criteria.
How to identify a Lyft Teen ride
We’ve made it easy to spot a Teen ride request so you always know what to expect before you tap "Accept."
- The Request Tag: You’ll see a clear "Teen passenger" label on the acceptance screen.
- After pickup: A list of tips to guide you appear once you pick up the Teen rider.
What to do at pickup
To keep things running smoothly and safely, follow these "rules of the road" for every Teen ride:
- Check the Name: Confirm the rider’s first name just like you would with any other passenger.
- Backseat Only: For safety, all Teen riders must sit in the backseat. Only passengers 18 or older are allowed to sit in the front.
- PIN Verification: Teen rides require a 4-digit PIN to start.
- Guest Rules: Teens can bring guests, but all guests must be at least 13 years old and have permission from a parent or guardian.
- Minor Policy: If a passenger looks under 18 and does not have the "Teen passenger" tag in your app, our standard policy applies: they must be with an adult. The Lyft Teen program is the only exception.
Available ride types
Teens have access to several ride types to fit their schedule, including:
- Standard & XL Rides: Both ride types are available for Teen rides.
- Scheduled Rides: Perfect for school or sports.
- Black & Black SUV Rides: High-end ride types are available for Teen accounts.
- Pets: Teens can bring pets along, following our standard pet policy.
Note: Shared rides are not available for Teen accounts at this time.
How to cancel a Teen ride
If a ride doesn't feel right or a policy is broken, you can cancel. These cancellations are paid and will not affect your cancellation rate.
New cancel reasons:
- "I don’t want to take a Teen ride": Use this if you receive a Lyft Teen request before you have the chance to opt out in Ride Preferences.
- "Teen is under 13": Use this if the rider appears too young for a Teen account. This triggers a safety check for the guardian account.
- "Other general Teen policy violation": Use this if a Teen refuses to sit in the back, refuses to wear a seatbelt, or tries to bring a guest under 13. This option should also be used if the Teen passenger’s guest does not have their parent or guardian’s permission to take the ride.
Lost items
If a Teen leaves something behind, we handle the return through their guardian to keep everyone safe.
- Report it: Use the "Found an item" flow in your app.
- Coordination: We will give your contact number to the guardian (not the Teen). They will contact you to arrange the return.
- Return Fee: You’re still eligible for the standard $20 fee once the item is returned.
Reporting a safety incident
Trust your gut. If a ride ever feels unsafe, report it to our Safety team through the "Help" section of the ride.
Please report immediately if:
- A Teen refuses to sit in the back.
- The rider appears under 18 and the “Teen passenger” tag is not present.
- A Teen brings a guest under 13.
- There are any inappropriate behavior or unsafe requests.
In an emergency, always use the in-app ADT Emergency button first.
