Rider policies for Lyft rides

We pride ourselves on our amazing community of drivers and riders. Here's a breakdown of our policies around the different uses for Lyft.

Skip to:
Children 17 and under
Children are more than welcome to join you in a Lyft ride, but they can’t ride without an adult.
You should plan on bringing your own car seat for children that need one. Car seats must fit legal requirements in your state and city.
Wheelchairs
Riders with fixed-frame wheelchairs can turn on 'Wheelchair' to request rides. In regions where Wheelchair rides are available, riders can request wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
All Lyft drivers are required by law and Lyft’s policy to transport riders who use foldable mobility devices.
Pets and service animals
Pets
If you want to bring a pet along, request a Pet ride through the Lyft app. Only available in select markets.
As a courtesy to other riders, pets should ride in a carrier, on a blanket, or at your feet.
Note: Drivers are required by law and Lyft’s policy to accommodate passengers with service animals even if you don’t request a Pet ride. Service animals are always welcome in any Lyft ride, including Pet rides.
Service animals
Lyft’s policy states drivers are required to reasonably accommodate riders with service animals.
Bringing friends
You’re welcome to bring along friends on your ride. Pile in, buckle your seat belts, and enjoy the ride!
A Standard ride can seat up to 4 riders. If you have a bigger group, a XL can seat up to 6.
Requesting rides for others
You're welcome to request rides for someone else. Just enter your friend's address in the app, then tap ‘Change rider’ at the top of the screen.
The driver and your friend will get details, and you can watch the progress of the ride in your app.
Running errands
We love seeing community members help each other out, so we see running errands as a great part of the Lyft experience.
When making multiple stops, keep in mind that drivers are just like you and may have other plans later in the day. Anytime you leave the driver's vehicle, please make sure to bring all of your belongings with you. If your stop is going to take longer than 5 minutes, ask the driver to end the ride. Then, request a new ride when you’re ready to go to your next destination.
